On May 18th, we’ll be riding for 7 year-old Araina Roderick of Sparta. During their pregnancy, her parents, Shannon and Brandon, learned that Araina would be born with Spina Bifida. Since her birth on August 18th, 2005 Araina has undergone 20 surgeries…that’s more than twice a year, every year of her young life. Araina also has Arnold Chiari Malformation Type 2 which is a structural defect in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance.
Doctors said that she would never walk, that she would have learning disabilities…Araina has proven the doctors wrong on several occasions! Her Mom, Shannon says “She is so determined and strong willed. She lives each day to the fullest and has taught us so much about life. She is my inspiration. She is a miracle.”
Araina is a student at Southside Elementary in Sparta. She is in a regular classroom setting, and only steps out for Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech. She has an aid that helps her during the day when she needs assistance.
Araina has an awesome little brother Devlin and a beloved dog named Scooby Doo. Mom works at Gunderson Lutheran in Nutrition Services and Dad has spent the last eight years working at Ft. McCoy.
Araina’s wish is to be a “princess” for a day and where better to do that than at Disney! Help us send this local family on a much needed family vacation to the famed castle and help a little girl’s wish come true.
Help us when we “Ride for a Reason” with Big Bikes for Little Tikes!
